Department of Endocrinology at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh was established by Late Prof. G.K. Rastogi in April 1967. Department has a credit to start first DM course in 1970 in Endocrinology in the country. Prof. R.J. Dash was the first fellow who did his DM in Endocrinology. Further, the radioimmunoassay laboratory was established in 1968 for the first time in the country and was an accredited laboratory with WHO for various hormonal estimations. After Prof. G.K. Rastogi migrated to the US in 1978, Prof. R.J. Dash became head of the department and remained till 2003. From 2004 onwards Prof. Anil Bhansali is heading the department. The department provides outdoor and indoor services for various medical and endocrine disorders and has 3 OPD clinics, Tuesday: Medical OPD (New OPD Block, 3rd floor), on Wednesday, Endocrine and Thyroid clinic and Thursday, Diabetes Clinic (New OPD Block, 4th floor) and also started special clinics on Diabetes in Young, Metabolic Bone Disorders and Diabetic foot. Endocrine Diagnostics and Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory is situated in the 3rd floor of research block B and Dr. Naresh Sachdeva is the in-charge of the laboratory.
The department has also initiated one more special clinic every first Tuesday of month for osteoporosis. The Endocrinology Department is a DST-FIST sponsored center and initiated world-className Metabolic bone research laboratory equipped with HRpQCT (High-Resolution peripheral Computer Tomography), BHMP-Bone histomorphometry lab, and Dexa Scan laboratory.
